Important cultural events to remember are the Literary Prizes “An Author for Europe” and “An Editor for Europe” awarded in September and the “Alassio for Cultural Information” Prize. The Literary Prize “An Author for Europe” is the result of a series of cultural promotions which, through its Library Service, the City of Alassio began in 1974 with “Meetings with the Author”. For twenty years some of the best Italian writers have come to Alassio to present their work, promoting the study of contemporary literature and a passion for reading throughout the city. In 1994 a show presented in two cram-packed cycles of meetings and debates called “Alassio 100 books – 20 Years of Meetings with the Author”, celebrated this important milestone and at the same time hinted at the chance to give a more dynamic framework and European flare to this now familiar encounter between writers and their readers.

And it was through this that a group of intellectuals and cultural workers which gravitated around the Library came up with the idea of a literary prize which would subject our narrative literature to the ridicule of a panel of Italianist foreign judges who either worked within the field of cultural information or taught in one of Europe’s main Universities.

The city of Alassio – Councillorship for Culture, established a prize in 1999 reserved for the world of the Italian publishing industry, assigned to an editor who, due to their cultural commitment and entrepreneurial ability, has significantly contributed to the development of Italian publishing from a European perspective. The prize, a particularly impressive plaque, is a reproduction of a water-painting by Edward Lear, painted in Alassio in 1864.

Completing the book-based theme, the city of Alassio, Councillorship for Culture, has organised the “Alassio for Cultural Information” Prize since 2006, in collaboration with the Turin International Book Fair.

The prize is awarded to someone who works in the media (daily newspapers, magazines, radio or television) who stands out for their innovative content and language, working to promote the spread of culture, especially books and reading
